Straddling the mouth of the Cetina River in the shadow of a barren mountain, Omiš is a pretty, former pirate haven between Split and Makarska. It is great for both relaxing and active holidays, with lovely beaches and great opportunities for sports like river rafting and rock climbing. Omiš has long been a fortified town, and fortresses where disgraced pirates used to hide are still standing today.

History and Culture

Omiš was first inhabited by Romans, and due to its strategic position on a river with a mountain, became a fortified town in the 11th century. Pirates were drawn to the area in the 12th and 13th centuries and made Omiš their base. You can still see the 13th century Mirabela Peovica Fortress where the pirates sheltered from enemy attacks. Omiš ended up in the hands of the Venetians in the 15th century, who built Fortica Fortress, which you can also see today. Omiš has a rich culture, and numerous local events throughout the year. Omiš also has a number of old churches, including the Church of Euphemia built in the 6th century. Visit in July to catch the Klapa Festival, where local singing groups perform ‘a capella’, in harmony without accompanying music. Other events include pirate-themed festivals and sports competitions.

Activities

One of the main attractions of Omiš is the beautiful Cetina River which runs through the town and inland to carve through vast mountains. You can go rafting over waterfalls through the countryside, or go canyoning and see natural caves and land formations. You can also swim and kayak in the river and enjoy its pristine beauty. The surrounding mountains and forest are great for all sorts of hiking and rock climbing. Omiš also has great beaches along its 35km of coastline. There are a mixture of large sandy beaches and small secluded spots. The main Omiš beaches Velika and Punta has a sandy shore with lots of restaurants, cafes and shops. Nearby Dugi Rat has some beaches great for families and children, and the Brac Channel is good for windsurfing and boating.
