History and Culture
Omiš was first inhabited by Romans, and due to its strategic position on a river with a mountain, became a fortified town in the 11th century. Pirates were drawn to the area in the 12th and 13th centuries and made Omiš their base. You can still see the 13th century Mirabela Peovica Fortress where the pirates sheltered from enemy attacks. Omiš ended up in the hands of the Venetians in the 15th century, who built Fortica Fortress, which you can also see today. Omiš has a rich culture, and numerous local events throughout the year. Omiš also has a number of old churches, including the Church of Euphemia built in the 6th century. Visit in July to catch the Klapa Festival, where local singing groups perform ‘a capella’, in harmony without accompanying music. Other events include pirate-themed festivals and sports competitions.
