Sandwiched between fantastic beaches and a mountainous nature park, this area is perfect for the active tourist. Some of the best beaches in Croatia are on the Makarska Riviera, with lots of long, luxurious sandy shores. In the Biokovo Nature Park, you can rock climb, hike, walk or take an off-road tour.

Makarska

Makarska is a beautiful natural port, sheltered from the sea by a peninsula, and from the elements by the magnificent Biokovo mountain range. The highest peak in the range is 1762m and in winter the mountains are often covered in snow. Venture into the mountains for walking, hiking, climbing or take an off-road tour. Makarska has a pretty pebble beach more than 2km long, as well as shady pine tree-lined promenades. Check out the lush forest park on St Peter Peninsula, which has walking trails, a lighthouse, a beach and the oldest church in Markarska, the 13th century St Peter’s Church. If you want to get out on the water, take a ferry to Brač Island and explore the cute towns and little beach coves. For a taste of local culture, Makarska has a nice range of art galleries featuring local artists and some interesting museums themed around the town’s relationship with the sea.

Baška Voda

Just a few kilometres north of Makarska, Baška Voda is a small town with lovely beaches and interesting archaeological history. There are quite a few Roman archaeological sites in the area where burial chambers, ceramics, jewellery and coins have been found. You can see some of the artefacts in the local museum. There are also lovely old churches from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Baška Voda beach has lovely white sand stretching all the way to neighbouring village Brela. Many people consider Brela Beach the best beach in Croatia, and it has been rated among top beaches in the world by Forbes magazine.

Tucepi

This little tourist village and harbour south of Makarska was founded on Roman ruins and is surrounded by pine woods. It is home to the longest beach in the area which is 3km long, and has a beautiful seaside promenade. All around the village are small hamlets with olive groves and vineyards, some of which you can visit. One of the oldest buildings in Tucepi is St George’s Church, a well-preserved Gothic-Romanesque building built in 1311.

Food and wine

Specialities of the region include fritulas - deep fried dessert balls made from potato, apples, vanilla, rum and raisins; and Baška Voda’s sweet ravioli made with nuts, maraschino liqueur and chocolate. There is also the Biokovo Peka, a dish of veal, lamb, chicken, sausages and potato baked in an iron casserole. There are some lovely boutique restaurants in the area which serve fresh local produce and often do wine tastings.

Beaches

There are many beautiful and popular beaches in the area. The best are Baška Voda beach (Blue Flag), Brela Beach, Tucepi beach, and Nugal naturist beach.
