Korčula town is a well-preserved Venetian town with city walls and narrow streets on a small peninsula. There are 15th century towers, old fortresses and a cathedral. Legend has it that famous explorer Marco Polo was born in the town, and you can see the house where he may have been born. At the opposite end of the island is Vela Luka, a newer town of 19th and 20th century buildings and a ferry port.
Activities
Look out for performances of the Moreska Sword dance, a traditional island dance which tells the story of an ancient war. Visit Vela Spilja, a big cave near Vela Luka which was thought to be inhabited by humans 20,000 years ago. Korčula is ideal for cycling, with lots of quiet roads and tracks through the countryside. You can take organised cycling tours, or explore on your own. You can also follow walking and hiking routes which pass ruins, great views, olive groves and vineyards.
