Skradin is a beautiful hidden town built on the edge of a river and accessible from the sea by boat. It’s on the outskirts of the fantastic Krka National Park, where you can explore breathtakingly beautiful nature including waterfalls, rivers, valleys, forests and rare wildlife.

Skradin

Skradin is one of the oldest towns in Croatia, with lovely stone buildings and a picturesque marina. If you’re touring Dalmatia by boat, you can sail up the river Krka, past Šibenik, and find Skradin tucked away beyond Lake Prokljan. Skradin was originally a Roman town called Scardona, and was later ruled over by Venetians and Turks. Stroll the paved and often tree-lined streets and admire the historic churches and the mix of coloured and stone buildings. For older history, go 15km inland to visit Bribirska Glavica, an archeological site featuring ancient stone foundations of buildings, sarcophagi, sacral buildings and ceramic coldstores. If you want to go to the beach,  you can easily visit Šibenik and Vodice, just south of Skradin, which have a good selection of beaches. Skradin is the perfect place to base yourself for exploring Krka National Park. You can get there either by bike, bus or ferry.

Krka National Park

This fabulous park spans across more than 100 square kilometres, encompassing Krka River and Lake Visovac as well as gushing waterfalls, imposing valleys and lush forest. Take one of the designated hiking trails to pass through dense greenery, and cross wooden bridges over expanses of turquoise water. You can also take a boat tour along the rivers and the lake to see the park from a different angle. The main attractions are two gorgeous waterfalls - Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap, as well as five small ones. You won’t be able to resist a dip in the shimmering water and a swim under a waterfall (just make sure it’s a designated swimming area). The waterways have lots of different types of fish, and many types of birds live in the park - eagles, falcons, owls, herons, ducks, cranes and others. There are also protected otters living in the park, and Balkan whip snakes. As well as nature, you can see various historical monuments in Krka National Park. Along the riverside there are at least five ruined medieval fortresses, all built by Croatian princes and noblemen. Hidden deep in the park among rocks and scrub is the remains of a Roman military camp from the 1st century. Get a boat to Visovac Island, in Lake Visovac, to see a stunning spot with a well-preserved 18th century Franciscan monastery surrounded by pine trees. Croatia’s first hydroelectric plant was opened on Krka river in 1895, and you can still see the remains of it today. A newer plant is still in operation 100m downstream. Most of the trails and tours around Krka will take the whole day, but you can find a range of restaurants, bistros and taverns within the park to keep yourself going.

Food and wine

Skradin has a number of nice restaurants serving locally sourced food and local specialities. One of the favourites is Skradin risotto, made with a secret recipe which needs to be prepared about four days in advance. Another unique food is the čokalice fish from Lake Prokljan, the taste of which is influenced by the mix of salty and freshwater in the lake. There are a number of wineries in the region where you can do tasting, but one of the best is Bibich, a winery which exports around the world.
